Navy Gateway Inns and Suites

As members of his proud family looked on, Bldg 429 at the New London Naval Submarine Base, CT was rededicated in honor of World War II submariner and Medal of Honor recipient Rear Admiral Richard H. “Dick” O’Kane in October 2009. He was a New Hampshire native, born

in 1911.

O’Kane served in the Navy from 1930-1957. He received our nation’s highest honor for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity” in action against the enemy during October 1944.

The re-dedication and ribbon cutting marked the completion of a three-phase transformation of the former barracks building through the Navy’s Shore Vision 2035 plan, according to an article written by Electronics Technician 3rd Class Melissa Gavin who served at the Public Affairs ofﬁce last year.

O’Kane Hall, the Navy’s most recent vision of shore-basing, is an innovative retail, recreation, and most importantly, temporary military lodging™ opportunity.

This new lodging facility has 35,000 squarefeet with a spacious lobby warmed by a twosided ﬁreplace. It has 80 renovated and newly-appointed guest rooms.

Standard rooms have 32” ﬂat screen TVs, a three drawer dresser, small desk and a comfortable chair. A queen-size bed is standard here as well as a private bath. These rooms, at our press-time, were available for $66 per night. Call to verify prices 860-694-3416.

There are two VIP suites. These include two 42’ ﬂat screen TVs, one each in the bedrooms and living rooms. These suites have a kitchenettes, upgraded amenities, including plush queen mattresses. If you are taking a mini-vacation on base, you will ﬁnd plenty of options to make your trip worthwhile. The check-in building shares space with the Navy Federal Credit Union, the CPO Club and the Ofﬁcer’s Club, known as ‘The Dive”. Also nearby are the bowling alley, theater, Navy Exchange and Commissary plus the bank, golf course, fast food, and ﬁtness center to work off the calories. Morale, welfare and Recreation (MWR) activities round out the picture.

As you pay your bill at the new Navy Gateway Inns and Suites location, say thanks that there are no sales taxes added to your bill. This really can make the difference these days as many states are looking for more income for their treasuries.

We visited Groton, CT several years ago. We could not get in the Navy Lodge and went off base to a commercial hotel. Even back then, prices for a good, clean hotel or motel in this area were extremely high. Thank goodness for facilities such as Navy Gateway Inns and Suites and

the ever-popular Navy Lodge which are both available on the Sub Base!
