Dear Ann, Roy, RJ and “R & R” Readers:
Well, Summer is upon us, and Ken and I are, once again, ready to take off and enjoy
another “Summer Sunbird” summer at the University Apartments in San Luis Obispo, California!
This summer’s full season is June 7th through Sept. 5th! That is 91 days, and the cost for
the 3 bedroom apartment is $4250. That
averages out to just $46.70 per day! And with our
reservation for the full season, we get about $500. worth of dining, tours, local wines, etc.!
These apartments, of course, are student apartments, so the furniture is geared to students!
But it is very adequate and comfortable. The apartments we are going to this year have a large,
heated pool, a fully equipped exercise room, a media room where they put on movies, and you
can view DVD’s, a computer room. You do have to either rent from them, or bring your own;
a kitchen package and a linen package. We have our own, that we box up, and keep labeled,
in our garage, for “summer”. We mostly take ours back and forth; but they do, as a group,
rent a storage shed and pack, mark and store them from year to year – a bunch of them get
together and split the cost of the unit. The apartment is furnished with beds, desks, lamps,
living room furniture, refrigerator, stove, micro-
cable company, to upgrade for your computer.

It is a wonderful way to go – for those of
us who want a change of scenery, cooler
weather for the summer! Every year we
meet new folks, and renew friendships
from years past, with others that are
there! We do many group activities and
tours, dinner outings, summer concerts in
the park, etc.
I will take photo’s, once we are there, and
get them to you, of the apartment
complex and San Luis Obispo!
We are planning a side trip, on our way to San Luis Obispo: we’ll leave Phoenix and drive to
Albuquerque and spend the night at Kirtland Air Force Base. We always stay there – it is a
delightful base. From there we will drive north to Westcliffe, Colorado where Virginia’s daughter
and grandson live. We’ll stay there for 2 nights, then drive back to Flagstaff where we have
reservations at Ft. Tuthill! It is a beautiful camp among the big pine trees! They have both
cabins, camp spots and a hotel – we will stay in the hotel for one night. Next morning, up early
and drive to San Luis Obispo and check into our apartment! Here again, I will take photo’s as
we stay at these Military facilities – and get them to you, along with a short letter of our stays.
Here is a “heads up” of info that you may or may not be aware of: we are making plans
for
our annual December trip to
Hawaii. You can now make
Bellows reservations 13 months
In advance, via Internet; 12
months in advance via
telephone. NOTE THIS: They no
longer have their “800”
number! Just use the 808
number listed in your
Temporary Military Lodging™
book.
For the Pililaau Army Recreation
Center at Waianae; ONLY Army
can now make reservations
12 months in advance! Other
services can make reservations,
90 days in advance. This is a big change, and worth noting.
Ann, Roy and “R & R” readers:
See page 2, 3 and 4 for the “Summer Sunbird Housing List”, with as many updates as I could
obtain for this year. It is about 4 pages long, but great information! I’ll also attach a photo of Ken
and I. Ann, I hope this helps I’ll be in touch, as we travel, soon!
Best wishes to you and your family! Hope all is well with you.
