A most interesting Air Mobility Command Air Terminal is located in the heart of Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Virginia. It is called the Naval Air Terminal Norfolk. Norfolk Naval Base is the world’s largest Navy base, and surrounding the area are the towns of Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. You cannot wander far without meeting a military person and their family living in these areas.

Yet, when I meet them in my daily life, I often ask if they have ever flown Space-A air out of Norfolk Naval Base. Few say yes. They are missing out on a great military benefit right here in their midst. And military flights are FREE; only commercial contract flights have a cost and that is near equal to the taxes paid by individuals traveling by commercial aircraft. Nothing compared to a $6,000 roundtrip flight, for example!

Norfolk is a wonderful place to land with opportunities to visit a great tourist area with many military lodging opportunities. You can go onward to other military air terminals in the US and abroad right from this Navy/AMC Air Terminal! The Norfolk Passenger terminal’s current hours of operation are 0400 to 2400 hours. Passengers are not allowed to sleep in the terminal overnight. Military and commercial lodging is available for overnight passengers, and there are many options available in the Hampton Roads area: the Navy Lodge Norfolk, Navy Lodge Little Creek-Ft StoryNavy Lodge Oceana/Dam Neck and Navy Gateway Inns & Suites in Norfolk (Naval Station Norfolk, JEB Little Creek Drexler Manor and Shields Hall), Chesapeake (Naval Shipyard, Scott Annex, Northwest Annex) and Virginia Beach (Oceana, Dam Neck).

Ample parking is conveniently located adjacent to the terminal with the exception of oversized vehicles (i.e., motor homes, campers and trailers). Parking areas are provided for the following: Short-term Parking, Long-term Parking, Disabled Parking, Distinguished Visitors (Senior Officer O-6 and Enlisted E-9, and above), and Parking Oversized Vehicle Parking. Any passengers intending to leave their vehicle parked for an extended period (greater than 48 hours), must obtain a long-term parking pass. The long-term parking pass may be obtained inside the terminal at the passenger information counter. Long-term vehicles should be parked only in the designated long-term parking area and the parking pass should be prominently displayed in the vehicle. More information can be obtained online at www.airtermnorva.navy.mil/Parking.htm.

The Norfolk Navy/AMC Air Terminal’s service areas are the following: North Atlantic; Keflavik, Iceland; Mediterranean; Southwest Asia; Rota, Spain; Naples, Italy; Sigonella, Italy (Sicily); Bahrain; Caribbean; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico; among others. There are at least three or more monthly US destinations out of Norfolk, such as the following places: Andrews AFB, MD; Pope AAF, NC; Augusta Regional Airport, GA; Jacksonville NAS, FL; Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA; and New River Marine Corps Air Station, NC.
