Great American Rail Trail Runs Coast to Coast

The Great American Rail Trail runs coast to coast, beginning in Washington, D.C., and ending in Washington State. The full map of the trail will be released in spring 2019, but 12 gateway trails will make the route possible, attaching to several gateway trails such as Capital Crescent Trail, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, the Panhandle Trail, the Hennepin Canal Parkway, the Casper Rail Trail, and Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail.

Gateway Trails:

CAPITAL CRESCENT TRAIL – Bethesda Naval Support Activity is approximately 5 miles and offers military lodging.

CHESAPEAKE & OHIO CANAL NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK – Fort Detrick is approximately 15 miles from the Point of Rocks access point but does not offer military lodging or RV camping.

PANHANDLE TRAIL – Pittsburgh Air Reserve Station is approximately 15 miles from the Noblestown area access point and offers military lodging.

OHIO TO ERIE TRAIL – Columbus Defense Supply Center is approximately 25 miles from the  Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park access and offers military lodging.

CARDINAL GREENWAY – Grissom Air Reserve Base is approximately 30 miles from the Sweetser access point and offers military lodging.

HENNEPIN CANAL PARKWAY – Rock Island Arsenal is approximately 15 miles from the Timbrook Field access point but does not offer military lodging or RV camping.

CEDAR VALLEY NATURE TRAIL – There are no military installations within close proximity to any of the access points.

COWBOY RECREATION AND NATURE TRAIL – There are no military installations within close proximity to any of the access points.

CASPER RAIL TRAIL – There are no military installations within close proximity to any of the access points.

HEADWATERS TRAIL SYSTEM – There are no military installations within close proximity to any of the access points.

TRAIL OF THE COEUR D’ALENES – Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington is approximately 55 miles from the Trail of the Coeur D’Alenes access point and offers military lodging and RV camping.

PALOUSE TO CASCADES STATE PARK TRAIL – McChord Air Force Base is approximately 60 miles from the Cedar Falls access point and offers military lodging and RV camping.
