The Veteran ID card is mainly for veterans that are not eligible for full retirement benefits. It is an alternative to the VA ID card “Veteran proof of service” letter.
As of September 2022, all new Veteran ID Cards are digital. If you already have a physical Veteran ID Card, you can continue using it to get discounts.
This Veteran ID card does not replace a Veteran Health Identification card (VHIC) or a DOD ID Card.
You are eligible for the Veteran ID Card if
Both of these must be true:
You served on active duty in the Reserves or the National Guard (including the Coast Guard), and
You received an honorable or general discharge (under honorable conditions)
If you received an other than honorable, bad conduct, or dishonorable character of discharge, you’re not eligible for a Veteran ID Card. If you have an uncharacterized or unknown discharge status, we’ll have to verify your eligibility before we approve your application.
You’ll need to provide a copy of your discharge papers when you apply for a VIC to prove your character of discharge.
To apply, you will need the following:
Your Social Security Number (SSN)
A copy of your DD214, DD256, DD257, or NGB22 that you can upload.
A recent colored photo from the neck up and no hat or headphones. (much like a passport photo)
After submitting your application, you can receive updated status by text. Applicants usually receive the Veteran ID card within ten days of application.
