Happy Birthday, Coast Guard!
The U.S. Coast Guard will celebrate 229 years on Sunday, August 4, 2019! The U.S. Coast Guard, first known as the “Revenue Marine,” has been around for more than 200 years and was founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1790. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Life Saving Service were merged to form a single maritime entity called the U.S. Coast Guard.
Today, the Coast Guard is comprised of over 42,000 men and women dedicated to 11 official missions. In 2003, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security took over jurisdiction following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
